Info-Cancer Services: The Quebec Cancer Foundation and Myeloma Canada Join Forces to Optimize Support for People with Cancer
Montreal, June 15, 2022 – The Quebec Cancer Foundation (FQC) and Myeloma Canada are joining forces to strengthen the support offered to people with cancer.
Each day, 10 Canadians receive a multiple myeloma diagnosis, the second most common form of blood cancer.
Despite its growing prevalence, multiple myeloma, frequently called myeloma, remains relatively unknown; most people living with the disease recall hearing the words: ‘multiple myeloma’ for the very first time when receiving their diagnosis. Those affected by this incurable disease must be informed and supported by members of the Canadian myeloma community who have similar experiences, whether it be living with myeloma or acting as a caregiver for someone diagnosed with myeloma.
With 44 support groups across the country, Myeloma Canada believes that getting one-on-one support from a peer helper can also make all the difference. The reality of everyday life with myeloma remains frightening because the question is never whether there will be a relapse, but rather when it will occur.
Since they share this common experience, people redirected to the Quebec Cancer Foundation’s telephone peer matching service will be better equipped to understand, take charge of or deal with their respective situation.
“Our expertise in oncology and the relevance of the psychological support offered through our telephone peer matching service will help reach more people living with myeloma to support them through their journey. Together, we will facilitate access to support and better meet the needs of the Quebecers living with myeloma and their loved ones” explains Marco Décelles, Director General, Quebec Cancer Foundation.
By joining forces to enhance the telephone peer matching service for Quebec patients, both organizations work together to improve the well-being of patients and their loved ones.
“We are proud of this partnership with the Quebec Cancer Foundation and to be part of their telephone peer matching service to directly support myeloma patients across the province. This resource will allow Quebec patients and their loved ones to access better support and to speak privately with a program volunteer who will bring comfort through their shared experience. By working with the Foundation, Quebec myeloma patients will have access to support adapted to their needs and circumstances,” explains Mrs. Martine Elias, Executive Director, Myeloma Canada.
