Letter to the Editor: The best of science and the worst of bureaucracy
We invite you to read our opinion letter, written by Jessy Ranger, Director, Patient Programs, Health Policy & Advocacy at Myeloma Canada, and Christina Sit, Manager, Community and Strategic Partnerships at The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, on the issues of access to treatment and care. As the country’s Prime Ministers embarked on their summer meeting, we wanted to issue a call to action, for all those who feel as we do that the system has failed to protect the population, particularly in oncology.
We were delighted to see Ontario Premier Doug Ford announce at his press conference that he would make access to drugs a priority. But putting drugs on the provincial formulary won’t be enough. Barriers to access affect every sphere of our economy, and our blood cancer patients are currently the main victims, as are many other cancer patients.
Our letter was published in Le Devoir on July 15, and was quoted in the follow-up article on the Ontario Premier’s statement written by Kristin Rushowy in the Toronto Star on July 16.
